THE PROBLEMS WITH OUR DRINKING WATER

Sometimes water has an unpleasant odor or taste, which may not be unhealthy but isn't desirable. Other times drinking water problems derive from chemical or biological contaminants that can affect your health. Most contaminants enter the water supply through landfills, deteriorating underground storage tanks, industrial waste, agricultural fertilizer and pesticide run-off, storm water run-off, and leaching from plumbing materials. Some contaminants also occur naturally in water and soils. Under the provisions of The Safe Water Drinking Act, the public water supply systems are faced with the growing problem of dealing with this increasing number of contaminants, many of which were unknown when the treatment plants were designed and built. To make matters worse, many treatment systems are strained to capacity in order to meet increases in water demand. To deliver water that meets all minimum health requirements, they are sometimes forced to produce water that is highly chlorinated or which simply does not taste or smell good. To protect themselves from potential water contaminants as well as to enjoy better tasting and smelling water, more and more people are turning to purified water as their source of drinking water.
